Autumn in Pamporovo

The Rhodope Mountain region is stunning in all seasons. As summer is winding down, there is still time to catch some of the warmer weather. Autumn is a beautiful time to explore the wonders of the region. Here are our top 6 picks to do when you stay with us this autumn:

Take a hike!

Orpheus Waterfall

Hiking Rhodope MtsNo, I am not telling you off. For real! Put on your hiking boots and open the door! There is much to see and experience on foot in the Rhodopis. Bulgaria is one of the top three countries in Europe with regards to forest biodiversity. If you are new to this lovely pastime, you will discover heaps of easy walking trails. The well-marked trail of The Canyon of Waterfalls is a ‘must-see’ boasting 60 beautiful waterfalls of various sizes. On the Smolyan Fortress Forest and the Nevyastata Forest walks you can visit the fortress and treat yourself to a stunning 360-degree view. The Wonderful Bridges, formed over time by river waters, is an easy walk. If you need a bit more of a challenge, there are moderate and difficult treks to try as well.

Exploring down under.

Devil's Throat

Underground River in Devil’s Throat

This is not a blog about going walkabout in outback Australia so I must be talking about the caves of the Western Rhodope region. Perhaps you prefer to explore underground. Once again, you can choose from the easiest to the most challenging. Devil’s Throat and Yagonina Caves are the most popular with tourists. Uhlovitsa Cave, Garga dere and the Water Cave, as well as Haramiiska Cave, are recommended for those more physically fit as they can be difficult to navigate.

It’s out of this world!

Autumn Planetarium

Smolyan Planetarium

Visiting the Planetarium in Smolyan is a great way to entertain the kids (big and small) for an afternoon. Shows are offered in the Star Hall several times daily in Bulgarian. Sessions in English as well as other languages are available in the afternoons. The Planetarium is open 7 days a week with telescopic observations on clear days. Then, before heading back ‘home’ up the mountain to the village of Stoikite, you can get a quick snack or a yummy meal and something to drink at one of the lovely restaurants in Smolyan.

Food. Glorious Food!

Patatnik

Speaking of FOOD…! All of you Foodies out there, you are spoilt for choice when it comes to authentic Bulgarian favourites. Traditional comfort dishes specifically unique to the Rhodope region such as smilyanski bob (beans), patatnik (potato) and rodopski kiln (bread) will warm you right up. From the small family owned restaurants/guest houses, to something a bit more ‘upmarket’, all the way up to the very elegant, this region has all your preferred dining experiences on offer and all of it is delicious!

Go back in time.

Shiroka Laka Pamporovo

The ancient village of Shiroka Luka

Bulgaria is steeped with a rich history and there are many places of historical significance in the Western Rhodopi region. The ancient town of Asenovgrad will keep you busy all day visiting the medieval Church of St John the Baptist, Arapovo and Gorni Voden monasteries nearby, as well as Asen’s Fortress. The historic village of Shiroka Laka boasts antique Rhodopean architecture, an authentic pub, quaint shops and traditional music. If you are a fan of the Ottoman period, you might like to visit the estate of Adushevi Konatsi in Smolyan. Interestingly, Adushevi Konatsi’s decendants still own the residence and it is now a museum.
